Suggested Products: Maca

We last explored the wonders of Maca in our previous post as a plant to consider especially during the stressful holiday/winter time.

Maca is an adaptogenic, which means that it helps to combat the adverse effects of stress on the body, which consequently can affect your hormone levels, libido, mood, energy, and overall equilibrium.

Due to its sweet, earthy flavor, we recommended one easy quick way of enjoying it is in your hot chocolate/coffee.

*Please note for ingested dosages - it’s advisable to start low to observe effects and gradually increase. Please listen to your body’s judgement and take at your discretion especially if you have certain medical conditions, are breastfeeding/pregnant.

We are not doctors and these are not medical statements. We encourage every individual, since we all have different needs and physicalities, to please do their own research before integrating these remedies into your own life.*

Overall, the dosage for Maca varies from each body to body. The doses may vary for a different age group, physical condition, and can depend on the health concerns being addressed.

The general dosage is 1,500-3,000mg.

”Traditionally, maca is treated as a food product, rather than a dietary supplement. Animal studies use 1,000-2,200mg/kg bodyweight doses of maca, which translates into:

  • 10.9-24g of the maca vegetable for a 150lb person

  • 14.5-32g of the maca vegetable for a 200lb person

  • 18.1-40g of the maca vegetable for a 250lb person”

As Maca is non-toxic, it should generally be safe and can be taken daily, but again please always do your own research and listen to your body.

Here are some of our recommendations:

For powders:

We’d say this is the most common form to ingest Maca and all its deliciousness.

1) Anima Mundi - @animamundiherbals
Aiming to preserve ancient botany, Anima Mundi sheds a spotlight on herbs from South/Central America.

They carry a solid 4 oz. bag of pure organic Maca.

Generally we find it best to isolate plant supplements to more easily observe the effects on yourself. It’s also easier to understand the flavor of the plant as other ingredients may alter the flavor in whatever you decide to mix the supplement in.

Maca powder works great in drinks, smoothies, smoothie bowls, protein bars, etc

Then there’s a whole array of Maca powder blends.

2) Moon Juice - @moonjuice
The brand was the creation of a “world-traveling chef, mama, sustainable lifestyle leader, and passionate food educator.” You can find Moon Juice products now popularly stocked at even Urban Outfitters.

They carry a unique approach to wellness through food products.

We discovered their boldly named Sex Dust several years ago. We found it to be marketed as something welcoming to those newly getting acquainted with holistic herbal supplements.

It has Stevia as an ingredient, so if you find the taste of herbs to be a challenging part of holistic health, their mixes are easy to drink. (Not that you need to worry about Maca as we find it already easily-palatable and quite delicious.)

Ingredients (some organic): Cacao Powder°, Shilajit Extract, Shatavari Root Extract, Epimedium (Horny Goat Weed) Leaf Extract°, Maca Root Extract°, Schisandra Berry Powder°, Stevia Leaf Extract (Reb A)°

3) Wild Foods Co - @wildfoodsco
Wild Foods is committed to bringing us back to our ancestral “wild” knowledge with real, responsible ingredients to combat the negative effects of our broken food system.

They source from small producers that respect the environment and our laborers and want only real foods that assist in our health and longevity.

They carry a popular Wild Cocotropic Superfood Cocoa Drink Mix.

Maca popularly mixes well with cocoa, and this product mentions “100% Non-Alkalized Wild Cocoa Powder” in addition to Reishi Mushroom Extract, Chaga Mushroom Extract, and Turmeric Powder.

This sounds like a whole major upgrade from Swiss-Miss.

4) Sun Potion - @sunpotion
We find Sun Potion to be one of the best when it comes to potent quality organic and wild-harvested herbs. They are deeply committed to purity and the integrity of their products.
Their intention “is to deeply nourish and activate the whole body, mind, and spirit with these Transformational Foods.”

We’d say every serious holistic health participant must be stocked with Sun Potion in their cabinets.

Their Green Adaptogen is a unique blend we don’t usually see with Maca. It consists of Suma, Maca, and Chlorella.

So if you aren’t looking for cocoa in the mix and are in the mood for something more green, this might be another good option.

For Capsules:

5) Mountain Rose Herbs - @mountainroseherbs
One of our go-to sites to purchase singular herbs in bulk carries organic Maca in capsules if you prefer.

100 capsules at 620 mg each

For Tincture:

6) Herb Pharm - @herbpharm
Another go-to for all things tincture.

Organic Maca tincture is available in an extract of 673 mg per dropper bulb dose. It comes in 1oz and 4oz bottles.

For other food products:

7) Fat of the Land - @fat_of_the_land
Fat of the Land “is the work of a community herbalist, land steward, gardener & writer based in New York’s Hudson Valley.” As their brand name suggests, they aim “to share and honor the wisdom, magic, and abundance of the land.”

We love that they focus on seasonal and bioregional plants, bringing forth a sense of connectedness to Nature around us.

We’ve seen Maca in sweets like chocolate bars, but this brand has it in Hudson Valley honey!

Their 6oz glass jar of Root Nectar also consists of ashwagandha root, shatavari root, cinnamon, cardamom.

You really can’t tell us having Maca isn’t delicious. We also have some ideas on how you and your lover(s) can savor this honey ;)

maca-mesquite-walnuts_600x600.jpg

7) Moon Juice - @moonjuice
We had to mention Moon Juice again because they also have Maca as a nut snack.

Their caramel-y Activated Maca Mesquite Walnuts is a quick, easy, on-the-go way to have your fill on Maca.

Ingredients (some organic): Activated walnuts°, bananas°, alkaline water, dates°, maple syrup°, mesquite°, activated almond butter°, maca°, cinnamon°, pink salt, vanilla°
